CAPTAIN CANT
SENT TO PRISON FOR THREE MONTHS CHARGE OF EMBEZZLING GOVERNMENT MONEY By Telegraph.—press Association. Copyright London, February 11. Three months’ imprisonment was imposed ou Captain Cant, who was arrested on January 11, and who pleaded guilty to embezzling £l5O belonging to the New Zealand Government. The prosecutor said that the Government sent Captain Cant to navigate a motor-vessel from Ireland to New Zealand, placing certain moneys at his disposal. While Captain Cant was in Ireland Sir Tames Parr was informed that certain charges were awaiting in New Zealand. Sir James Parr then telegraphed releasing Captain Cant from his duties, and the latter shortly afterwards disappeared, taking £l5O of New Zealand money with him. He surrendered to the nolice on February 4.
Captain Cant, from the dock, said: “I never knew what I was doing, and some power swept me over. These charges from New Zealand are due to unscrupulous junior officers, who stabbed me in the back when I was 11,000 miles from home.” The Magistrate said ft was possible that the charges were trivial, and one of the allegations, "personal misconduct,” might merely mean drunkenness.
