MAGISTRATE’S COURT
PALMERSTON SITTING
Palmerston North, February 6.
Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North this morning, when Ralph Erskine Hewatt was charged with, on November 28, at Palmerston North, driving a motor-car in a manner which might have been dangerous to the public. Defendant, who was represented bv Mr. Cooper pleaded not guilty. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady, who appeared for the Police stated that the defendant had collided with a carrier’s express near Cole’s buildings on the date mentioned, and it was suggesred that ho had been driving 011 the wrong side of the road at the time.
Evidence was given by Frank Goodrick, a carrier, of Palmerston North, to the effect that defendant had collided with him. Evidence from Constable Gurvey, however, proved that defendant bad been on his correct side of the road, and as no evidence as to the speed that defendant was travelling was forthcoming, the Magistrate dismissed the case.
For riding his motor-cycle over an intersection at a speed of 45 miles an hour, Rudolph Gust was fined £2 and costs, 3s. On the information of the inspector, Katherine Wilson was fined £2 with costs at 10s. for failing to eradicate a hawthorn hedge within six miles of Palmerston North. “H is the only one out of 160 that has not been eradicated,” stated the inspector.
