CIVIC LEAGUE

EXECUTIVE MEETING. A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Wellington Civic League was held last week. The newly-elected president of the League, Mr. J. N. Wallace, was present, and was unanimously’ elected chairman of the Executive Committee. It was decided to support the Wellington Automobile Association in its protest against the erection of a pier in the middle of the Hutt Road as proposed by the Government.

The secretary was instructed to follow up the letter of Mr. A. P. Harper in respect to the adequate protection of high level roads. On the recommendation of Mrs. E. J. Moore it was resolved to consult the Baths and Reserves Committee and the City Council in respect to the installation of hot salt water baths. The City Council will be asked to provide better lighting facilities near the Bidwell Street tram stop, for the existing conditions were considered extremely dangerous.

The council will be asked also to enforce the by-law respecting one-way street traffic. It was stated that the present regulations as to one-way thoroughfares were apparently ignored through the ignorance ol users, and lack of control on the part of the city authorities. It was resolved to refer to the next meeting of the League’s Council the question of the corporation’s ’buses being governed by a separate head, apart from the Tramways Department. The present system was considered very unsatisfactory, not catering for the public requirements, especially in regard to the Roseneath district, whose residents were solely dependent upon 'bus transport. Mr. F. J. Moore said that the City Council should be urged to be in readiness to deal with winter uneniplovment, and have suitable works available to be dealt with immediately the time was opportune. It was decided to gather data and draw up an unemployed relief work scheme for submission to the City Council. Mr. J. H Whittaker was re-appoint-ed to represent the League on the Carillon and Free Ambulance Committees.
