WAIRARAPA TOURNAMENT B. P. WELCH WINS MEN S SINGLES COMBINED DOUBLES TO MR. AND MRS. MELODY . Dominion Special Service. Masterton, January 26. The annual tournament of the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association was concluded this morning, when the three matches remaining were decided. In tho final of the men’s championship singles B. P. Welch (Masterton; met F. W. Martin (Masterton). The match was short and sharp. Welch was in the best of form and drove hard into the corners, while his volleying was good. He took the first set to love. In the next set Welch took the first game and Martin the second, but Welch assumed the lead at 4—2. Martin won the next and YVelch went up to 5—3, taking the next: game ami match. With the score 3—2 against him in the second set Martin ricked his ankle, but after a rest resumed playing. Ho drove well, but did not nave the consistency of his opponent, and his volleying was weak in comparison. He played some good passing shots. The semi-final of the combined championship doubles saw E. B. Wellwood (Masterton) and Miss Ormond (Napier) matched against J. C. Charters (Whiingurei) and Miss Stevens. The first set was liard fought and went to 16 games; Wellwood and Miss Ormond winning 9—7. The second went to their opponents 6—l, and in the deciding one Wellwood and kliss Ormond came in strongly to win the set 6—2 and match. Well wood’s net play was' one of the deciding factors of the game, . while beautiful lobbing by tho two ladies Wiis a feature. The" winning pair were generally superior, although this was Miss Stevens’s first experience of a tourney and she played wonderfully well. tn the final, however. W. J. Melody and Mrs. Melody (Wellington) wore not offered serious opposition. They did not strike form immediately, and G , P' r opponents secured a lead, but they took the first set 6—3. There, were some good rallies, in which Miss Ormond shone, but Melody played a winning game at the net, and the combination was too much for Well wood and Miss Ormond.
