NARROW ESCAPE
RESCUER NEARLY DROWNED

In saving a boy from drowning at Sumner this afternoon a middle-aged man caine neOar to losing his own life. At 2 o’clock a seven-year-old boy whose surname is Mortimer, and whose home is in Sydenham, was fishing or bathing at the base of Cave Rock, when he. fell into the sea. A man rushed forward, jumped in and dragged the boy on to the rocks. In climbing out himself the man slipped into deep Water and was carried out by the current. The lifeboat siren was sounded and the crew arrived, but in the meantime a yacht drew alongside the man, who was held up unttl he could be restored to the beach. He was in a very exhausted condition, and it was only after very strenuous efforts and the arrival of a doctor that hope was held out for his recovery.
