EDUCATION BOARD

POSITION OF PROPOSED SCHOOL WORKS Mr.’ T. Forsyth, M.P., presided at tlie meeting of tlie Wellington Education Board yesterday. Others present were Messrs. F. Robertson, G. T. London, J. Stonehouse, W. D. Pike, D. McCallum and J. J. Clark. ■A further grant was received from tile Education Department to enable the Board to accept the lowest tender for the erection of the manual centre nt Mt. Cook School, which work is flow in hand. A grant was also received towards additions to the infant school at Muritai. The Board was authorised to purchase an area at Kilbirnie for extension purposes up to the limited amount stated or to take the land under the Public Works Act. The Education Department notified that the following urgent works must be postponed until after March 31: — Science room, Martinborough; room for special class, Petone Central; additions at Seatoun, to be considered after the opening of Rongotai Boys’ College; additions to Wilford School; rebuilding at Picton, but plans to proceed. A letter from the Controller of Prisons intimated that the transfer of prisoners from the Terrace site could not be effected for a few months. The refresher course at the Training College from January 23 to January 27 inclusive, was approved by the Department. This is being fairly well attended. .. After the conclusion of the Board meeting members took the opportunity of attending the afternoon session of the refresher course, and were present at lectures on expressional drawing by Mr. L. T. Watkin. Training College staff, and on methods of teaching writing bv Inspector Burns. At the conclusion Messrs. G; T. London. D. McCallum and W, D. Pike expressed the great pleasure thev had derived from the able expositions they had listened to, and also their sense of the devotion of’ the teachers to their profession at shown bv a voluntary surrender of a week of their holidays for professional study and improvement. Senior Inspector Strachan thanked the members for their interest in the present course.
