FALCON ISLAND
“VERY MUCH THERE” Dominion Special Service. . Auckland, January 25. “They call it a floating island, for the reason that over a stretch of years it has popped up in different places,” said Mr. J. D. ’ Whitcombe, of Nukualofa, this morning, in giving a few details of the volcanic Falcon Island, forty-fiye miles distant from Nukualofa, which has been in unruly mood of late, clouds of white steam being visible lor many miles on a clear day. Mr. Whitcombe said there had apparently been a controversy of late in connection with the existence of the island, but it was very much there, anil was not to be confounded with another volcanic island in the locality. When Falcon Island was thrown up from the seabed in 1893, said Mr. \\ nitcouibe, it was three miles in length and a mile wide, but of a low height. Composed mostly of ashes, it washed away as the rears went on. It was now’ of considerable height as the result of volcanic action, a very interesting development being the gradual formation of an excellent harbour at the northern end.
