LAST YEAR’S LAUNCHINGS
INCREASES IN CANKERS AND MOTOR VESSELS

“Lloyd’s Register’s” annual suminarv of shipbuilding in ' 1927 shows .that 2,285,000 tons wen . launched throughout the world, of which 1,225,000 were in Great Britain md Ireland, 289,000 in Germany, 179,000 in the United States, and 119,000 in Eolland. The tonnage launched in Great ‘Britain and Ireland increased by 586,0(0 compared With 1926, but the world trial decreased by 4,860,000 compared with the repord year of 1919. The world total includes nineteen vessels each over 10,000 tom, of which nine are over 15,000 tons-each. .Of this’ tonnage 336,000 will be fitted with steam turbines and .864,000 with internal combustion engines. The total steam tonnage launched throughout the world, namelv, 1,375,000, inc.udes 470,000 fitted to burn oil fuel, so. that out of the total world tonnage launched in 1927 only 905,000 ar.e exclusively dependent on coal for propulsion. The tonnage tinder construction throughout the world at the end of the year was 3,119,000, an increase of 1,186,-000-compared with the beginning of the year, of which 820,000 isJ in Gieat Britain and Ireland. The world tonnage afloat m. June, 1927 was 59,688,000, compared with 42,514,000 in June, 1914. It is noteworthy that tankers increased from 1.47J,000 to 5 916,000, and motor-ships from 234 000 to 4,271,000 tons, and steamers fitted for oil fuel from. 1,310,000 tons to 18.500,000 tons.
