Mr. G. W. Kirk, head teacher at Springlands, who has been transferred to Inglewood after 36 years’ service in the Wellington Education Board’s district, was the subject oi special reference at the meeting of the Education Board yesterday, yri> en a motion of appreciation of his long and able service was recorded on the minutes.

Mr. G. Wheeler, assistant teacher at Brooklyn, has been granted six months’ leave of absence to enable him to make a trip to England. Mr. D. Fulton arrived in Wellington yesterday from Tuakau to attend a meeting of the Dairy Produce Board.

Lieutenant-Colonel F. Symon, Director of Artillery, left yesterday for Ngaruawahia, where the Third Field Battery is encamped. Mr. R. L. Wigley, lessee of the Hermitage, Mount Cook, is a visitor to Wellington. He reports that the season has been a good one, and bookings are encouraging for the rest of the summer season.

Mr. R. G. Brown, an ex-bank manager of Belfast (Ireland) is touring New Zealand. He has booked to leave Sydney for London by the Oronsav in March.

Mr. W. N. Gamble, a well-known member of the committee of the Auckland Stock Exchange, died at Takapuna, cm Monday. He spent the greater part of his life in Auckland, his father having been United States Consul at Auckland for many years. Mr. Gamble was at one time on the staff of the firm of A. H. Nathan, Ltd. For many years past he had been a member of the Stock Exchange, being a partner in the firm of' Gamble and Walker. Mrs. Gamble survives her '’husband. There are the following children:—Mr. John Gamble, who is in the East; Mr. Gamble (Auckland), and two daughters. Another son made the supreme sacrifice during the Great War. Mr. R. E. Tripe, who has been appointed associate to Mr. Justice Blair, will take up the position at Auckland this week. He will be missed in cricketing circles, as he was a popular member of the University senior eleven. The Hon. G. M. Thomson, M.L.C., arrived in Wellington by the Limited express yesterday. On the tve of his retirement,'Mr. W. G. K. Kenriek, S.M., was yesterday, at Rotorua, farewelled by members of the Bar, Justices, and representatives of all local bodies. Mr. G. Urquhart, on behalf of the Bar, stressed the high esteem in which Mr. Kenriek was held by all classes, and referred to the honourable administration of his office. At the meeting of the Harbour Board last night the chairman (Mr. J. G. Cobbe) stated that Mr. M. Cohen 'was returning from New York, and would arrive at Wellington about February 16. He had recovered from his serious illness, and his return would be welcomed by all members of the board.
