The toheroa beds at Muriwai Beach have been fully exploited during the holidays (reports the "Now Zoaland Herald”). Prospecting for .shellfish i? *be popular pursuit with both campers and visiting motorists. There uro no iudi. cations that the beach is being stripped, but the Motutara Domain Board thought it was time to draw the lino when lorry loads in excess of one ton were taken out of tho sand. It was staled that the shellfish are worth £lO a load in Auckland. .The Domain Board was somewhat baffled in its search for a means ot restricing the commercial element. It was obvious that there were complications since the toheroa lurks below highwater mark, in which area it had no authority. A good legal weapon was found, however, in one of the boards by-laws, which, at the discretion' or lhe board, excludes conimoreial vehicws from tho r.oad through tho bush. Imocation ot the regulation closed tho only access to the beach.
