PARCHED RANGITIKEI

RAIN BADLY NEEDED. Marton, January 25. Evidence of the severity of the present spell of dry weather and the crying need for rain in the Rangitikei is contained in the fact that so far this month only .05 inches of rain has fallen and that fall occurred as far back as January 2. The average rainfall for this month taken over a period of twenty vears, is 3.0-1 inches, and when it. is considered that the drvest month inside twenty years had a rainfall of a nuarte. of an inch the seriousness of the situation can be realised. Ihe country lias a parched appearance, and voting crops of rape and turnips are badly in need of rain. The shortage of water supplies is also causing concern, and all sections of the community are feeling the effects. Fortunately no serious grass fires have so far occurred.
