HUTT ROAD TRAFFIC
IMPRESSIVE PROCESSION OF MOTOR-CARS The Hutt Road is no place 'for pedestrians .on the evening of a race day. From 6 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. last evening there was almost a continuous procession of cars townfvard from the Hutt Valiev, with only a few yards between each. Now and again an impatient driver would break the line and dash forward past half a dozen cars before he could get into line again, a most reprehensible practice, as the line was proceeding steadily at a pace of between 25 and 30 miles per hour (as the constable could testify)-, and those who “did their dash” must have been travelling at a pace beyond the legal speed. . At one point a group of people who wished to cross from one side of the road to the other had to wait fully seven or eight minutes before they espied a break between cars long enough to enable them to take the. risk of crossing, and, when they did, others who were watching raised an ironical cheer, as though the feat were no common one. Though the bituminous road is still in fine condition, regular users of the road state that it is “cross rucked” to a greater degree than it was two years ago.
