MANAWATU CLUB’S RACES HIGH SPEEDS ATTAINED Palmerston North, January 23 Favoured with beautifully fine weather, the Manawatu Motor Club’s race meeting at Ashhurst attracted a large crowd of spectators, fully 2000 making the trip from Palmerston North. The presence of several of New Zealand’s foremost riders added considerable interest to the meeting, and. with the track in good order, some excellent times were put up. An innovation was the new lap scoring board, which showed plainly the laps each rider had gone and the number of laps in the race. The day was not marred by any serious accident, although in the first and third races the riders suffered spills. Results are as follow:— ASIIHURST HANDICAP. Five miles. —l. Spence, 1; E. Pink, 2; A. Harker, 3. C. Goodwin headed for the manuka on entering the straight in the third lap, but escaped serious injury. Won by 106 yards, same distance between second and third. Time, smin. 9see. RAUMAI HANDICAP. Five miles — \V. Allan, 1; D. Smith, 2; D. Managh, 3. Won by the length of the straight, 50 yards between second and third. Time, 4min. 45 2-ssec. POHANGINA HANDICAP. Five miles.— W. Herbert, 1; P. Coleman, 2; C. Wilkinson, 3. On entering the straight W. Allan came to grief, but suffered only slight concussion. Time, 4min. 38sec. MANAWATU HANDICAP. Eight miles. —T. Morgan, 1; H. Morgan 1; J. R. Arnott, 2; H. Tolley, 3. An exciting finish, Arnott taking second place from Tolley on the winning post. Time, smin. Msec. TIRITEA HANDICAP. Seven miles.— E. Hemmingsen, 1; I. Spence, 2; A. Harker, 3. Another exciting finish, a length separating the three first riders. Time, 7min. 17sec. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. Seven miles. —D. Managh, 1; R. G. Harford, 2; W. Allan, 3. Time, 6min. 44 4-ssec. FINAL HANDICAP. Seven miles.— A. Harker, 1; C. Wilkinson, 2; P. Coleman, 3. Coleman, starting scratch, allowed the competitors a good lap before the gong sounded for him to start, and he put up a great performance in finishing third. Time, 7min.
