DEFEAT FRANCE BY NARROW MARGIN by Telegraph.—Press Association. Copyright. Paris, January 22. The Waratahs defeated Franco by 11 points to 8. The weather was showery and the ground sticky. The Waratahs opened briskly, and reversed the majority of its previous performances by showing the best form in the first half, and failing to score fin the second. The Australians had the better of the early scrums and line-outs, while the I renchmcn were erratic, though they made a few hot-paced rushes, but could not score. Ford was the first scorer, after twenty minutes from the start of the game, scoring trv which wns not converted. The Australians’ pressure at stage was continuous, Towers and Wallace scoring tries in quick succession, which Lawton converted. The Frenchmen, with 11 points to nil against them, rallied, and a spirited lell-wing movement resulted in Camel getting over for an unconverted try. The I rtnclinien, heartened by this score, played with renewed energy and courage, and Ross was kept busv, but checked repeated attacks. At half-time the score was 11 points to 3. Early after the resumption Dupont cut through and passed to Bonamy. in front of the goal, the latter scoring. Bebotguy converted. The crown s enthusiasm rose to fever-nitch as the race increased, and pfay became rormher. Two free-kicks were awarded the Waratalis. but Lawton failed to score. The Australians again took the nnner hand, and had the ball most of the time. Alanv promising thrce-qinrter line moveraents were cheeked by lhe French fullback.
