BUSH FIRES IN NELSON DISTRICT
VALUABLE SCENIC RESERVE DESTROYED By Telegraph.—Press association. Nelson, January 23. No serious damage with the exception of the destruction of fifteen acres of a valuable scenic reserve at Longford, on the Nelson-Dlurcliison Road, was reported during the week-end. The State Forest Service gang has the fire well in hand. The fire in the Tophouse region is being tackled from the wings and the valleys leading up to this area are being cleared vp. The Reefton forestry officer reported that a considerable number of bush, fires had been caused by smouldering abandoned r.olleries, some of which had been burning for over twenty years. IN AUCKLAND DISTRICT. Auckland, January 23. A fierce fire is raging over the hills between Katikapakapa find Waiimiiktt and has destroyed some hundreds of acres of scrub and green bush and is rapidly approaching closer settlement tn Waikoukoit Valley. Smoke is visible for miles round. The damage so far is confined to pastures and fences, farmers having been able to remove their stock to safety..
