PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET

OTAGO DISMISSED FOR 155 WELLINGTON MAKE 229 FOR THREE JMcGIRR TAKES FIVE WICKETS By TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. Dunedin, January 20. The match between Otago and Wellington was commenced on Carls brook to day in ideal weather. Otago was without the services of Alloo and Bastman. and Donagliuo replaced Taidpr iu the Wellington.team. Otago won the toss, and elected to bat first, Knight and Cherry opening to the bowling of McGirr and Massey. Cherry turned McGirr’s second ball to leg for two, arid drove . the last ball ol the over for. another two. Knight faced Massey, but treated him with respect, and a maiden over resulted. Another, two by Cherry off McGirr followed, and again Massey sent down a maiden to. Knight, McGirr doing likewise to Cherry. The next oyer saw Knight open his score with a single off Massey, and Cherry snicked the last ball away for one, and faced McGirr, only to bo clean bowled by the second ball W the ■ over. 8—1 —7. McMullan, the incoming, batsman,( opened cautiously, .and for the next few overs runs came slowly, Knight also playing a strictly defensive game. A single by the latter brought 20 up, and immediately afterwards McMullan spooned up an easy catch off McGirr, and was .taken by Lambert. 20—2—6. Blunt; replaced McMullan, and Badcock went on in place of Massey, a bye for two. coining from his first over to Knight. McGirr was getting. a. good deal of pace off the pitch, and Badcock Was. well on the wicket, with" the result that the. rate of scoring .was. slow, eight more runs Only, being hoisted at the end of another twenty minutes’ play. Blunt began to open out in the next ten minutes, and was mainly instrumental in carrying the score to 50. Knight was the next to go, being completely beaten by a beautiful ball from McGirr. after, batting 50 minutes. 51—3—11. Cavanagh followed Knight, and opened quietly. Sixty went after an hour’s play, with a beautiful short to the boundary by Blunt. A succession of singles by the same batsman followed, Cavanagh, in the meantime breaking his duck with a nice on-drive for 3. He,' however, was not comfortable,- and-treated the bowling with " respect, ■ McGirr was replaced by •Lambert, who opened‘by sending down’a maiden to Cavanagh.' ' Blunt: cut Badcock nicely for two, and • brought his score to -IO with a. drive past cover to the boundary. Shortly afterwards, in trying to pull Badcock to square leg he put an easy catch into Donoghue’s hands. 77._L4._43. The advent, of' Galland was disastrous for. Cavanagh, as in attempting ..a., single from-his first strike, be ran the latter out. 77 —s—l.5—1. Dickinson joined Galland, and with these two at the wickets the game brightened-some-what, but on McGirr taking over again from Lambert the scoring became slow. Badcock was also bowling well, and sent down three maidens in succession. The century went up after 95 minutes’ play, and Brice replaced Badcock at the bowling ci* > ase. Shortly afterwards Dickinson tipped one from McGirr, and was smartly taken by James. 110 —6—9. Vorrath followed Dickinson., but survived only three balls from Brice before being caught'at mid-off by Lamason. 111—7 —0. Kimes was the incoming batsman, and he opened with a single off Brice just before the luncheon adjournment, when the score stood at 113 for seven wickets.' -On ’the resumption Badcock. relieved. Brice, and in his second over Kimes, in attempting to ent him. was caught m.the slips by Massey. 125—8 —5. Douglas followed Elmes, and Galland brought his 30 up with a pull to the boundary. Brice took over from Badcock, again, and Galland. in attempting to drive him io the off,; failed to get the ball properly and gave an easy catch to Lambert. His was a bright innings, and included eight 4’s. 155—9—55. K. Torrance, the last man, lasted only for two balls, when he was run out, the innings thus ■ closing for 155. , Badcock and Worker were "Wellington s opening ' abtsmen, Dickinson and Torrance handling the attack for the home team. One run only, a single by. Worker off Dickinson, came from the first two overs, and Dickinson’s third over got this batsman l.b.w. 4 —1—2. Koley, the incoming man, opened quietly to Dickinson, nut soon opened out, and with a pretty drive to the fence,, brought ten up Badcock, in the meantime, was playing himself in, and two singles and a four were his sole contribution in the first half-hour. Runs continued to come slowly, both of the batsmen finding it difficult to get through the Otago field. Forty was hoisted after 45 minutes’ play, and Knight replaced Dickinson. A four by Koley, off- Torrance brought his-score to 20, Badcock now began to scorn more freely, and with a sucoesßin, of crisp singles soon, had 25 to his credit. Blunt went on to howl in place of Knight just before the tea adjournment, and on resuming play Dickinson came on- again and replaced Torrance. Blunt appeared to be pitting very little spin off.the ball, nevertheselss.,neither, of the batsmen'*could take liberties with him.- - Dickinson, on the other hand, although he was getting plenty of pace., was erratic. The batsmen now began to go for the howling, and Badcock, with a nice shot to the boundary, brought his score to 46. making the total 80. A few, minutes .later Foley also reached 40 with a similar stroke. A leg-bye brought the century, and Badcock. reached 50 with a forcing, stroke off Dickinson past point. Again the changes were rung in the bowling. Torrance going on -in place of Dickinson, but this made little difference to the batsmen, who continued to score freely with shots all round the wicket. After a few overs Torrance went off. Knight going on in his place just as 60 went up against the names of both men. Douglas replaced Blunt. At 68 Badcock gave a hard chance to Dickinson,, who failed to hold it. hut -made no mistake a few minutes later when this batsman put one up from Knight. 159—2— 77. Badcock was hatting for two hours . and six minutes. Lamason joined Foley and Dickinson again took, over the bowling from - Douglas. .Blunt also went on again. Lamason opened brightlv and soon had 20 to his credit, while Foley continued-to score steadily. A pair of bves brought 206 tin. and Torrance replaced Blunt. Shortly afterwards Lamason was run out through a smart return by, Cavanagh. 213-3-91. T.owrv was the next man. but he did not attempt to. force the scoring, and Folev who wanted only 4 for his , century, was playing cautiously. Again. Blunt went on. but the change proved of no avail, and the batsmen were unbeaten at the call of time. The scores were as follow. — __ OTAGO. First Innings. ’ A. Knight, b. McGirr 11 R. Cherry, b.
