ANNIVERSARY DAY

NUMEROUS ATTRACTIONS The anniversary of the founding of the Wellington Province will be celebrated to-day by a public holiday. The public will have a wide choice ot entertainment. For those who enjoy the sport of Kings, there will be the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting at Trentham to-day, and on Monday. The Wellington Cricket Association has decided to continue championship competitions on all grounds, the round being limited to one day’s play. The Wellington Tennis Association will hold their championship tourney on the Miramar courts to-day and bn Monday, when some really good play should be witnessed.

For those who follow athletics, the electric light meeting at the Basin Reserve to-night, and the sports meeting on he libspital grounds at Porirua on Monday should fill the bill.

The excursion which the Union Steam Ship Company is arranging to Picton and Blenheim on Monday by their luxurious turbine steamer Wahine should enable city dwellers to see something of the beauty of the Sounds. The steamer will leave Wellington at 8 a.m., and arrive back at 5.15 p.m. A yachting contest also figures on the local programme on Monday, and the round of festivities will be fittingly closed with the big fireworks display which is to be given at Athletic Park on Monday night. EASTBOURNE FERRY SERVICE.

The management of the Eastbourne ferry and motor-omnibus service draws attention to special attractions to-day on the ferry steamers. The Balclutha Boys' Brass Band, which has been touring New Zealand, has decided to stay an extra day and give the eastern side of the harbour the pleasure of one of their popular open-air concerts. The ferry steamer leaves at 2.30 p.m., and the band will play on the wharf at 2.15 p.m. and on the journey across the harbour, and render an open-air concert at Day’s Bay Pavilion at 3.15 p.m. Patrons may avail themselves of the round trip—boat and bus home. The journey across the harbour is itself worth while, and the beaches at Rona and Day’s Bay are in perfect order, and perfectly safe for those who delight in the water. For those who seek other amusements there is the bush, a large number of grass and asphalt tennis court, a bowling green, and a putting green at Day’s Bay. The special time-table for January 23 appears in to-day’s issue.
