MAGISTRATE’S COURT

BROKEN BY-LAWS WARNING TO MOTOR-CYCLE LEARNERS Breaches of by-laws were dealt, with bv Messrs. R. W. Burbidge and H. W. Lloyd in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. There was again a lengthy list, 85 cases being dealt with. Most of these prosecutions were for failing to have lights on vehicles at night, a number of people pleading 'daylight saving” as an excuse. Speed traps set in the city resulted in a number of fines being imposed. During the (proceedings S'enior-Ser-geant Scott, of the Taranaki Street Police Station, referred to the dangerous practice of young men learning to drive motor-cycles in main thoroughfares. He explained that the position governing learning to drive a motorcycle differed from that governing a motor-car. In the latter case the teacher sat beside the would-be driver, but in the case of a motor-cycle the driver had to go out on his own. Mr. Scott pointed out that young men frequently drove up and down the town and round the constables on point duty, who usually were quick to detect inability to drive. When spoken to it was usually found that they were learning to drive, and that they did not have a driver’s license. . „ “It is a dangerous practice, said the senior-sergeant, “for young men to go along the main thoroughfares. There are plenty of quiet back streets in Wellington where they can learn to drive without being a danger to the general public." The following cases were disposed or; Speeding.
