LATE SPORTING

DARGAVILLE MEETING OPENS i L SIR ROSEBERY WINS CUP . JOCKEY SUSPENDED FOR ' SIX MONTHS Dominion Special Service. -- Dargaville, January 12. Only a fair crowd witnessed the first day’s racing at Dargaville to-day, the ■weather being perfect and the track hard. The racing was good, with the exception of the hurdle race, which was a most unsatisfactory race. In connection therewith, W. Tricklebank, rider of Maniahera, was suspended for six months under rule 1, party 25 (not trying to- win). The owner’s explanation was accepted. The totalisator figures were .£8399 10s., against JL'B24O on the first day last year, an increase of .£159 10s. ■ The Prime Minister presented the gold stop watch attached to the Avoca Handicap to a deputy of M. J. Carroll, Macroom’s trainer, who was not present. MAIDEN HANDICAP. Exalted and the Takatuma King Leslie were almost evenly backed in the maiden handicap. Takatama and -Bainagar* soon put a break on Corinax and Kaihoremai, with Exa'lted well back.. Takutama was clear- at the distance, with Corinax challenging and Exalted coming fast from the back. A fine finish - saw Takutama last long enough to beat Exalted by a head,—with Corinax a neck away third, Glenetta, Bainagar and Ponticus bein’ next. , The placed horses were well out from the rest, and Exalted would have won but for a slow beginning. Corinax had every chance, but he looked as if a- race would 'do him good. The winn»r has - fine speed, but at present • does not run on well. TOKATOKA HANDICAP. Automne was a good favourite for the Tokatoka Handicap. . With Fiery-Lad, the favurite made- the running,- this pair' being joined by Creation at the turn. Automne had Creation beaten a furlong from home, when Wee Marble slipped through on the rails, to beat a length, with Creation a length away third,, and Fiery Lad and Homan’■ Abbey next. Creation. 'and'; Roman. . Abbey went wide at the turn and may be the likeliest to improve. ■ ■ KAIHU HURDLES. Comet King had a slight call over Scott Free in the betting on the Kaihu Hurdles. Scot Free went out in front, and at the hurdle in the straight ran right out to the wing, causing Comet King to fall. After this he went right: away and won hard ridden by three lengths from Maniahera, with Master Arch third. It was an entertaining race, and Scot Free can be termed lucky to get the prize. Comet King looked like being, too good for them when practically knocked over, and it will -not be surprising to find Maniahera beating Scot Free easily on the second day. ■ SETTLERS’ HANDICAP. . . Houhora was at a short price in tlio Settlers’ Handicap. He began well and led in the middle stages from tMarble Mount, Gazerin and Winning Lass, this being the order at tho turn. Houhora had to bo ridden out to beat Marble Mount by a short neck, with Winning Lass a length and a half away third, and Gazerin fourth. The class was bad and the placed horses will need to be risen a good deal to giro the others a chance on Saturday. ">■ DARGAVILLE CUP HANDICAP. 'Alonsoa and Tresillian were best back* fid of the five runners for the Daj-ga-ville Cup. There was not much between the field in the early stages, but five furlongs from home Sir Roseberry went out dear and, despite a •trong challenge from Alonsoa, beat her nicely by two lengths. Right and-Left,-who threatened danger at the turn, was weakening at the end two lengths away third, with The Author and Tre■sillian in order. Tho last-named was going badly all the way. The winner’s victory was quite decisive and ho has come on very quickly. Ho pulled iip seemingly quite cound. AVOCA HANDICAP. Dave and King Emerald carried most money in-the Avoca Handicap. ' Dave and Macroom were squeezed back at the start, Automne . and Bright Dawn making the running to the turn, where Macrooin, King Emerald, and Rarakau wcro next. Macroom finished brilliant- • ly to boat Rarakau by a length and a half, with Dave half a length away and Automne and Bright Dawn next. The winner won on her merits, as she was in the rear with Dave at the start but soon ran up to the front division and maintained her run splendidly. Dave also did well as he remained at,the tail of tho fie’d until the straight was . reached. King .Emerald looked washy and ran accordingly. Rarakau also finished well after losing, her position in the middle, stages. ' . / . z AWAKING HACK HANDICAP. "Wee’Marble was another short priced ~ favourite in the Awakino Hack Handicap . Fiery find led all the‘way, and stalling off a’ run by Wee -Marble beat him by a head, with Ponticus ' a poor third and the others well beaten.Fiery Lad ran on better than earlier in the day and Wee Marble found his extra weight just sufficient to pull him up. Creation failed to stay and is far from solid. HOBSON HANDICAP. Illingar was favourite for the Hobson Handicap, and taking charge from the barrier rise led all the way to win nicely from Marble Mount with Arch Queen and Just Quietly right up. Arch Queen was a shade unlucky in the running, but for which she would have been second. Pita was very sore before starting and Tresillian also was feeling the ground. .. — : v DETAILED RESULTS By Telegraph.—puess Association. Dargaville, January 12. .
