FIRE IN BUSINESS PREMISES
BRIGADE’S BRILLIANT. EFFORT By Telegraph.—pblss association. Taumaruntii, January 9. Fire late on Sunday night broke out at the rear of buildings in Main Street, occupied by Messrs. Gardners,, Ltd., drapers, and Mr. F. E. West, baker. The fire spread with amazing rapidity in the wooden buildings ,and had a strong hold when the alarm was given. The brigade worked hard, and by herculean efforts . confined the blaze tn Gardners’ and West’s. Gardners’ premises were completely gutted, and Mr. West’s dining-room was badly burned. The origin of the fire is not known. The building occupied by Gardners was owned by Mr. J. E. Long, of Auckland. The insurances are not available. The stock and fittings were insured for £3500 in the New Zealand Office. Mr. West’s premises were owned by Mr. Goodwin, of Wellington. None of the insurances are available. MR. W. D. LYSNAR’S HOME DESTROYED By Telegraph.-press association. Gisborne, January 9.3 The homestead at Arowhana Station, an eleven-roomed dwelling, owned by Mr. W. D. Lysnar, M.P,, 40 miles from Gisborne, was destroyed by fire early this morning. Mr. Lysnar was roused from sleep and escaped hurriedly, and was able Io save only a few personal effects.
