INCREASE IN PETROL PRICE
NO ALTERATION IN TAXI ' FARES. Assurance is given that .the increase of Id. a gallon in the price of petrol will not involve an alteration in taxi fares, savs the “New Zealand Herald. No surprise need be felt ot this, as the additional cost per mile for the average taxi is less than one farthing a mile, and it would bo difficult to piovide for this on a taximeter. lhe effect of the additional cost of 4d. a o-allon for any class ot car is a matter of simple calculation. For a car running 16 miles a gallon the extra cost is one farthing a mile. On a consumption of 20 miles a gallon the increase is one-fifth of a penny a mile, and a light car. doing 28 miles a gallon would involve only one-seventli of a penny a mile in extra cost of fuel.
