GAS PIPES
HOW THEY MAY BE MADE TO LAST '‘The replacement of gas service pipes —oven if only every 20 or 30 years—and tlio subsequent breaking-up of expensive- road surfaces, is a serious matter to gas companies generally; anil the prospect of complete elimination, or at least considerable reduction, is altiactive.” writes Air. C. Harris, of Jatinlon. in an article on "Partial Drying of Town Gas” in tho "Gas Journal. “The outside service pipes may bo protected against corrosion by wrapping or lavino- in pitch; and this is widely done. Tint the effects of internal corrosion can only bo delayed by adopting a heavy gauge of- pipe and/or using the, more expensive wrought iron in place or steel , and moreover, in some cases larger pipes ar laid than are necessary, in order to allow for the deposition ot rust, which nrograssively reduces the bore of the pipe.”
