BUSH FIRES

DEVASTATED WIDE AREAS IN VICTORIA Melbourne, January 4. Reports from Wangaratta, Beechworth, and Wodonga state that the bush fires are practically under control The total damage is estimated at £150,000. The most extensive fires were in the Everton and Hansonville districts, ■where farmers and volunteers from the towns fought the flames for two days. This .fire reached within four miles of Myrtleford, which was saved by a change of wind. Another fire at El Dorado extended over an area of about ten by fifteen miles. One station lost five stacks of hay and a thousand bags, of grain. Hundreds of sheep are missing, but it is hoped that many are safe, as stock was driven away. Tn the Beechworth district several houses were burned, but the iTurniungee post office was saved after strenuous efforts.
