SHIPPING DISPUTE
STEAMERS IDLE IN AUSTRALIA

Three steamers are now idle in Sydney as a result of the seamen’s dispute.
The steamer Goulburn was unable to find three men to complete her crew, and calls were again made for the Saros and the Mackarra, but without result. At Adelaide the crew of the steamer Nalpa were given notice, as no unionists were offering to fill vacancies in her complement.GENERAL INTER-STATE . HOLD-UP FEARED I (Rec. January 4, 9.55 p.m.) Sydney, January 4. Calls for seamen for held-up vessels were again futile to-day. Fears are entertained that unless the Seamen’s Union withdraws the demand for full pay for members who attended the. stop-work meeting, and supplies full crews, a general hold-up of inter-State shipping will result. ' Thp shipowners’ representatives state that the position is becoming intolerable, and the companies will make no further concessions to the seamen in the hope of settling the dispute.
