HOMES FOR WORKERS

HUTT VALLEY SUCCESS The success which has attended the Hutt Valley settlement scheme was refered to by the Attorney-General (Hon. F. J. Rolleston) in the House of Representatives last night. The Minister stated that under the scheme contracts had been let for 300 houses, of which 179 had been completed. The average deposit paid was the deposits ranging from. 6s. 6d. to £lOO. The average cost on each house was £950, and the total payment per week for interest, principal, rates, and insurance was £1 10s. In the settlement there were 640 children dependent upon their parents, and the total numbe rhoused to date was 1070.

Sir John Luke (Wellington North) congratulated ell concerned cn the transformation that had taken place at the settlement. The greatest benefit arising out of the scheme was the new atmosphere provided for the children.
