BOWLS

SAVING THE GREENS

NEW SYSTEM OF PENNANT FLAY

Bowlers in tho Wellington Centre have had a very good run up to now so far as the weather is concerned, consequently they should bo in good form for the pennant games which are about to begin. All the openings have bcon favoured with fine weather, and only on one Saturday was the wind boisterous; but Labour Day upheld its reputation or either blowing er raining. This time it blew, and although a tew bowlers defied the wind, there was little enjoyment to be derived from tho play. When you see bowlers with their jackets on, the collars turned up round their necks, and hats pulled well down on their heads—to say nothing of stamping their-feet on the banks with (heir hands in their pockets while waiting their (urn—you may be sure that are only getting a minimum of fun out of it. Nevertheless (hero was a veteran of S 3. Mr. C. Damcnt playing on Hataitai green on Labour Day afternoon, and nil the wind that blew could not blow away his ontbuisasm. None of the tournaments set down, were played, and tho majority found consolation in billiards or snooker. The Pennant.

In recording the results of the senior pennant under the new system, it will not bo necessary to give the individual score of each rink. In order to secure the result all that it will bo necessary (o stalo'will bo the number of rinks competing and the number of rink wins. It will then be somebody’s, iob to work out the percentage of rink wins, which should lie done by the secretary of the club or the club official specially appointed for that purpose. Clubs should keep records of all their pennant contests, and nt tho end of the season forward to tho secretary of tho centre a total of games played, won and lost, and the percentngo of wins.' Otherwise a good deal more work is going to devolve upon the centre secretary than should be the case.

Savinci Wear and Tear. In the first week or two of the season some stress was laid on the importance of players standing on tho bank until if. came their turn to play. Daylight saving is going to considerably increase the amount of play on the greens, and if they aro going to last the season in fair order, tho ends of the rinks have to bo nursed as much as possible, Invariably the clubs took note of the warning, and in. most cakes issued special notices, asking members to observe the rule, which has not. bgen too well observed in the nast. Going round the greens it is pleasing to see that bowlers have realised the necessity of conserving the green by keening off until their turn comes. All of them will benefit bv showing this little bit of thoughtfulness now. and they are giving the grass a chance. At the Wellington green on Saturday one end of the green was covered with a lon* strip of canvas. Raving wear and team considerably. This was not done because "layers had not been observing, the rule, and on Saturday afternoon it was ouite noticeable how careful nlavers were to get off Ihe o-reen when they had delivered their howls.

For Melbourne. Wellington bowlers have not shown ant keen interest in the proposed test match between Australia and Now Zealand, neither has there been any rush to join thq Netf Zealand party to nlay in tho Australian bowling carnival at Melbourne.
