PLUNKET SOCIETY
BRANCH TO BE FORMED AT MIRAMAR
With a view to establishing a Plunket committee at Miramar, a well-attended meeting of members of the Miramar Progressive Association was addressed last night by .Sir Truby King on the work of the Plunket Society. Sir Truby King said the organisation only dated back 22 years, but prior to that ho had endeavoured to interest the people of Otago, as for the previous 25 years matters had been getting worse in regard’ to maternity. The speaker dealt witli the development of the society until now when it had over 109 branches. In addition to saving 1000 babies a year they wore benefiting from 5000 to 10,000. The speaker advocated men, especially married men. to spend one Saturday at football or cricket and three Saturdays in the garden, and let the family cat more fruit and vegetables in the raw state, which would do them all good. In tho last year X 35.000 had been spent on the Karitane Hospital, which was for the whole province and not for any particular portion of it. Branches of the society had been formed in eight of the suburbs, and it was strange that such a large district as Miramar with 8000 people had not formed a branch before this. The question might be asked whether the Karitane Home was not too extravagant, but to that he said. "Can we afford to have a less beautiful place in honour of motherhood ?” The chairman, Mr. E. O. Thornton, said further steps would be taken in ths direction of forming a branch of tho Plunket Society, and he heartily thanked Sir Trilby King for his address.
