SHOWERY WEATHER FOR OPENING HIGH STANDARD OF EXHIBITS FIRST DAYS AWARDS Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, November 1. The efforts of breed societies throughout New Zealand to improve the standard of the Dominion’s sheep, cattle, and pigs are reflected in the exhibits at the Manawatu-West Coast A. and P. Society’s annual spring show, which opened at Palmerston North to-day. Interested spectators spent most of the day around the pens, and the opinion is general that a marked improvement in quality is apparent in almost every case. Although the judging of most sections of interest to the farming community does not take place until to-morrow, the animals already oh exhibition are arousing keen interest.

Cold and showery weather prevailed for the opening of the show to-day, but the elements did not in any way mitigate the attendance of breeders, while a big attendance of the public is anticipated to-mororw and on Thursday to see the events of general interest. A greatly improved tone is observed in the pig classes, and many new exhibi--tors are showing on this occasion. Not only do the entries in this class show a decided improvement over last show, but there is also a marked improvement in the quality of the swine. While Berkshires appear to be the favoured breed in and around the district, ' other prominent breeds are also in evidence. Keen competition is forthcoming in all the pedigree stock sections, and in most cases many of the leading north island breeders are well represented. Jerseys, Friesians. Milking Shorthorns, and Ilerefords are representative of the best herds, and to-morrow’s judging will no doubt reveal a number of exceptionally fine entries. Horsemen are enthusiastic over the entries in the ring events, the hunters especially, being considered of outstanding merit. Owners from Hawke’s Bay. Wanganui, Rangitikei, Wairarapa. Manawatu, and Horowhenua have entered for a number of the principal events, and the display of horseman ship, which will extend over three days is already arousing great interest. JUDGES’ COMMENTS "I am agreeably surprised at an advance that has been made in the quality of pigs exhibited at this show,” said Mr. S. Knight, of Auckland, who judged the pig section He added that an improvement in quality was apparent in all classes, which indicated that breeders were showing a greater interest in improving their swine. A largo increase in the number of entries was also a pleasing feature. Mr. F. J. Denton, of Wanganui, judge of the photography section, said he was disappointed in the work submitted. The subjects chosen were mostly of a stereotyped nature, nnd most of the exhibits lacked technique. There were no outstanding exhibits, and in many cases it was difficult to award a first prize. Commenting on tho work displaved in the technical section, the judge. Mr. L. J. Watkin. of Wellinrion, expressed the oninion that, while th "re was a falling off in the number of entries in manv classes, some of thr> work was of outstanding merit.
