“SHOCK TROOPS”

INSECT REINFORCEMENTS FOR NEW ZEALAND

Under the heading ‘‘Britain Trains Insects to Lend to Now Zealand,-" the New York “Herald Tribune” gives prominence to the following amusing message from London referring to an undertaking which has since been abandoned :—

“An expeditionary force of insects will be sent soon to New Zealand. The Dominion has appealed for aid against tlie gooseberry and blackberry brambles and ragwort weed which has spread too rapidly. “At the experimental station at Harpemlon Hertfordshire, armies of English beetles and caterpillars are undergoing elimination tests to determine which bugs have the most voracious appetite for weeds and do not include vegetables and fruits in their diet. “When the insect “shock troops" arc picked they will lie rushed to Now Zealand and turned loose against the farmers’ enemies,"
