ACCLIMATISATION

WELLINGTON SOCIETY. Tho monthly meeting of the'Wellington Acclimatisation Society was held last night, Mr. G. W. Macintosh pro siding. The following letter was received from tho Department of Lands and Survey in connection with the society’s request to have Wairarapa Lake gazetted as a reserve for fishing and shooting: “Tho position is that the do main is under the control of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, and is leased to Mr. W. D. Simmonds for grazing, Tho tenancy is a temporary one only, and tho rights of the general public to the use of tho land aro reserved. The matter has been placed before the Minister of Lands, and it has been de cided that no change shall bo made in the existing reservation over the land. It is possible, however, that the purpose your society has in view is to have the reserve made available for camping by sportsmen. If this is the case, a camping area could doubtless be ex chided from Mr. Simmonds’ lease, or a suitable provision could be made in tho lease to enable camping permits to bo made. If the suggestion made above meets with your society’s approval, I shall be glad to look further into tho matter with a view to definite arrangements being made.” The letter, which met with the council's approval, was referred to tho South Wairarapa Committee for consideration. The curator reported that the opening day at Masterton was quite successful. Tho largest basket contained 16 fish, up to 111 b. The curator mentioned that eels were “getting a stir up,” as local members were giving a prize for tho largest ono caught during tho season. "About a fortnight ago,” ho added, "I had a day at the hatchery for the public, between two and three hundred people attending. Some took an interest in fish hatching, and others did not grasp the idea.”
