BOWLS

OPENING GREENS Several of tba greens in the Wallington Centre opened under very auspicious circumstances on Saturday. Tho last three Saturdays fiave been trloriouslv fine, and if next Saturday is as good, the clubs will have nothing to complain about sq far as opening days are concerned.

Care of the Greens. The president of Victoria Club cave his fellow-members a reminder which is timely to members of all clubs, and it is iust as well that bowlers should realise it while the season is ooening. Bowlers know well that by tho end of the season the greens are much Die worse for wear, and how well thev wear during the season depends upon the care exercised in the use of them at the beciuning of the season. Therefore, the first thing to impress upon bowlers is the fact that the introduction of davlizht saving is going to extend evening play on a large scale, and that 50 per cent, more play will take place on the greens (han hitherto. Therefore, it really, behoves members to jjbide by the rule which provides that when not playing their place is on the bank. Few bowlers when standing about the head during the plav keep still, and the constant padding at the end of the rinks while the crass ia voung and tender at the beginning does as much harm in a week as it takes months to recover f”oin. rhe green committees should keep their eyes on the rinks and give plaver-, a reminder when they forget the rule, and no bowler if so reminded should resent it. The Now President.

The new president of the centre is finding the going pretty good in following the example set bv Mr. S. M. Stone, last year’s president, in visiting the various clubs on the opening day. H® did well in getting round to five last Saturday, but Mr. Stone once w'ent the round of seven. Mr. Stone, by the is vice-president this year of the N.ZBowling Council, and will be president next season when the Dominion headquarters are in Wellington. But no president ever had a better training for the office of Dominion president than Mr. Stone, for during his two years of office as tho head of the Wellington Centre he had the privilege of welcoming the British bowlers, and also several teams and visitors from Australia. I think ho surprised everyone bv his capacity for work in the first year, and his re-election for a second year was a real tribute, and no empty compliment, to the manner in which he filled the office, for the general rule is a new president. There need be no fears ns to the manner in which he will discharge tho important duties which will develop upon him m 1927-8. He now holds the vice-prasidenFs badge, and with the one he will receive next year he will have achieved all the lionouis it is nossihle to bestow on “im, an his collection /if medals and badges will bo unique. He hopes, bv the way io be able to join the New party which will be going over to Melbourne to take part in the bio- Australian bowlinv carnival in December, but it will lie a rush to get back for the Potion tournament at Christchurch, which he will visit even if he does not play.

Pennant Games. At Victoria Club Mr. Marks had more to sav about the pennants, and Victoria s withdrawal therefrom, and appears to hold the view that if he could have gone the round of the clubs and . plained Victoria’s attitude ®ac h them in turn, he would have won l th S. fel “«b t. -talj ” E'Shte-S'"’’""~"w”*-Scatoun. and Lyall Bay.
