Possessed of just the necessary perceptive faculty, a water diviner, with his mystic rod, which is simply n bent stick, patrolle'd the little volcanic hill on Camp Farm, near Qtaliuhu, a year or two ago, and the net result of his investigations was to show that, as ho crossed and recrossed certain spots,, the stick developed a knack ot kickiug downwards with decided rigour. Investigations disclosed a flow oi water that was surprising (says the Auckland “Star”). The impressions of the moment led to the supposition that, a hidden river bad been tapped. Through fissures in the’ rock underneath it rushed upwards, unchecked in the driest months of summer. Various speculations have been made as to its origin, the latest theory being to the effect that a lost river has its beginning at the Waikato in tho vicinity ot Mercer. Tho distance io Otahuhu is 35 miles, a fact which does not disconcert tho theorists, although the intervening country is variel, and the ultimate destination, of the supposed stream, so far, unexplained.
