MOTOR-CYCLIST KILLED
HOW THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. Dunedin, October 10. An inquiry into the circumstances of the death of Bertie Walter Earley, who was killed at Waikouaiti on Sunday as a lesult of his motor-cycle somersaulting, was opened at the deceased’s late residence, Cutten Street, South Dunedin, to-day before Mr. H. W. Bundle, S.M. It was stated that Earley, in company with two friends, G. Hutchens and S. Bishop, went to Waikouaiti to try out their cycles on tho beach. A speed of about 40 miles an hour on second gear was leached by Earley, and Hutchens, who was riding close behind, noticed that the leading machine had developed a wheel wobble. The cycle somersaulted. Earley was thrown clear and lauded on his head two or three yards away, being seriously injured. Ho was removed to a nearby house, and Dr. Thomas, of Palmerston, was summoned. Earley lived till 12.15 p.m., tho cause of death being dislocation of the neck and fracture of tho base of the skull. The deceased, who was 21 years of age, and a windowmaker by trade, was an experienced motor-cyclist, and had ridden in races. The cause of tho accident is not definitely known, but the front tire was torn completely off tho wheel, though it did not burst. Tho. inquest was adjourned.
