FIGHT FOR POSSESSION OF
PEKING
ATTACKERS REPULSED Shanghai, October 9. The first clash between the Feng Tien and Shansi armies, virtually for the possession of Peking, resulted in favour of the defenders, the Feng Tienese. The battle, on the Peking-Suiyan railway front, commenced on Friday and ended with the Shansi attackers being repulsed with heavy losses, including the capture of five battalions and considerable munitions. The Feng Tienese are advancing, harrying the rear of the retreating army. MISSION HOSPITAL RAIDED Hong-Kong, October 9. A naval wireless message from Swatow reports that Chinese soldiers forced an entrance into the English Presby terian Mission Hospital, gagged the Chinese assistants, and threatened officials with revolvers, declaring that in the future they must receive instructions concerning the management from the military authorities. The doctor managed to get a message to a British warship, which immediately sent a platoon of armed naval ratings, which is guarding the hospital. The British Consul notified the Chinese authorities that the guard would not- be removed until he had assurance of no further molestation. The situation is considered serious.
