DOMINION’S RHODES SCHOLARS
AUCKLAND NOMINEES Dominion Special Service. Auckland, October 10. After a long session to-day, the professorial board of the Auckland University College selected Messrs. A. A Bailey and G. G. L. McLeod to be nominated for the final selection of two New Zealand students to go to Oxford University next year as Rhodes scholars. ' Five names were submitted to the board. Mr. Bailey is 20 years of age, and is a law student on the staff of Messrs. Fitchett, Rees, and Luxford. He was dux of the Sacred Heart College for two years in succession, and this year at' University College he is completing his LL.B. He is regarded as an exceptionally brilliant'student, and it is stated that from this point of view he made an exceptional impression upon the professorial board. He is a sound Rugby player, and was a member of the Auckland University team which visited Fiji last season. Mr. McLeod is 21 years of age, and is a member of the Training College teaching staff at Mount Albert. He is also said to have impressed the selectors bv his forceful personality. On the athletic side he is robably 'the most distinguished of the candidates, having represented his college at inter’Varsity athletic tournaments, and having played two games of _ Rugby for Auckland representatives this year. Last Saturday he played for the Rest of Auckland' against Ponsotiby, and he is regarded as one of the most promising young three-quarters in Auckland. He is a B.A. of Auckland University College,, and this year is taking honour*.
