TIMBER FAMINE

IN TWENTY YEARS PREDICTED Sydney, October 7. Giving evidence before the Constitutional Commissioner, Mr. Dalrymple, Mr. Hay, formerly Commissioner of Forests, New South Wales, said that the total timber resources of Australia amounted to 21,500,000 acres, 60 per ce'nt. consisting of hardwood, 25 per cent, of jungle wood, and 15 per cent, softwood. The proportion of hardwood and jungle wood were sufficient for the needs of the Commonwealth, but the proportion of softwood was quite inadequate for requirements, and would have to be supplemented by imports to the value of £4,250,000 annually. He predicted a timber famine throughout the world in twentv years’ time, when Australia would be affected more seriously than anv other country, unless a. definite policy of reafforestation was adopted.
