NURSES’ CONFERENCE

CONCLUDING DAY At the New Zealand Trained Nurses’ Conference, which concluded yesterday, suggestions put forward by tire Otago branch were fully discussed. These suggestions were as follow;— “That the attention of the N.Z.T.N.A. to the handicap placed upon those wishing to qualify as midwives by the working of the new Acts, and asks the conference to support the matrons of the midwifery and maternity training schools in their request that the regulations under the recent Act be amended as follow: — “That the examinations for Midwifery and Maternity Nurses should be twice yearly at fixed dates, preferably June and December. “That the 12 months’ maternity muse who passes her State examination with credit, ami is recommended by her hospital for good practical work, should, if desirous, be allowed to continue her midwifery course without the year’s interval. “The I'2 months’ maternity nurse is compelled to be satisfied for her first year of work or longer with only her maternity qualification, therefore she has no status outside New Zealand; is not eligible for membership of the N.Z.T.N.A. under its present constitution; has no higher status legally in 1 New Zealand than the untrained women who have been placed upon the register for their practical work alone, without any hospital training or examination.'’ It was felt that these Hew,'schemes must be tried before any alteration was made, and it was decided to ask 'the Registration Board to make things as workable as possible. In connection with the post-graduate nursing course, which was of great importance, the work of Mrs. Grace Neill, who contributed so much to the founding of a library for the purpose, was spoken of with gratitude. Letters of thanks were forwarded to the Hospital Boards’ Association for interesting information about the postgraduate course, and to those who had entertained the delegates while on their visit here.
