The reappointment to the Legislative Council for a further term of the Hon. Sir William Hall-Jones was announced yesterday. He .was sworn in in the Council 'in the afternoon.
Dr. Hardv Neil, who has been visiting Wellington, returned north last night. Dr. Law, resident surgeon at the Nelson Public Hospital, tendered his resignation at Wednesday’s meeting of the board, in order to enter private practice. Members expressed the hope that the resignation would be reconsidered, and it was held over pending a conference between the committee and Dr. Low.—Special.
Sir Laming Worthington-Evans, Britisli Secretary for War, has postponed until later in the year his visit to India (states a British Official Wireless message). In view of the possibility that questions will arise in Parliament concerning reforms in the Army organisation, he proposes to remain in London until after Parliament reassembles Mr. B. N. T. Blake, M.A., headmaster of the Thorndon Normal School, and Mr. C. A. Cumming, )M.A., headmaster of the/ Miramar South School, who have been appointed as inspectors for the Education Department, will take up their new duties in the Auckland district on February 1 next, they will continue as headmasters of their respective schools until that date. Dr. Franklin Kidd, D.Sc., of the Cambridge (England) Low Temperature Research Station, who is making investigations in New Zealand regarding tlie cold storage of fruit and other produce, arrived at Wellington from Auckland yesterday. Dr. Kidd was accompanied by Mrs. Kidd. Mr. E. D. McLennan, M.P., left Wellington for the north last night.
Just prior to his retirement from the management of the Wellington branch of the National Insurance Company of New Zealand, with which lie had been associated for well over thirty years, Mr. A. Simpson was met by a large gathering of members of the fire, marine, and accident insurance profession. Much appreciation was expressed by several of those present of the signal services rendered by Dlr. Simpson to the members of the profession during the fortv odd years he had been connected with it. Presentations were made to Mr. Simpson, who was assured of the very best wishes of all .for many years of < njoyment of his retirement.
Mr. C. Bary, headmaster of the Berliampore School, will return to duty on Monday after a severe illness extending over three months. Mr. B. Hume, of the Commercial Bank of Australia, has been promoted to' be accountant of the Palmerston North branch of the bank. He left Wellington on Tuesday to take up his residence in Palmerston. Mr. P. Best, chairman of the Waimea County Council, next month will complete thirty-seven years as a member of that body (states -nir Nelson correspondent). Mr. Best is now slowly recovering from serious illness, and a representative public meeting yesterday decided to take steps to recognise Mr. Best’s services, a committee being set up to report on what form the presentation should take. Mr. A. Stuart has been teappointed a member of the Wellington Land Board.
