NATIVE BIRDS FOR AUCKLAND ZOO
Sir,—l think a strong protest should be made against putting cur native singers into captivity. They would not thrive and sing when confined. If our parks had the right sort of trees planted in them and they were made attractive for birds by eliminating vermin, winter feeding the birds, erecting suitable bathing receptacles (these are made very artistic rin rough natural stone in some countries), then such birds as the tui would surely come along and citizens could hear some of the finest bird singing in the world. I have them around my homestead at intervals all the vear, and their singing is a delight to listen to. Trees, have been planted which supply food in rotation even’ two or three months, and the tuis come along and they are never late This way is surely better than letting birds mope and die in captivity.—l ain, etc., MANU.
