BIBLE IN SCHOOLS
Sir,— Frequently the suggestion is made that a plebiscite or poll of electors should be taken on the question of Bible reading in the public schools. This, I think, would be a very unfair and improper means of ascertaining the views of the people mostly concerned, unless the voting was strictly confined to parents or guardians having children attending the schools. Bachelors, spinsters, and parents whose children have all grown up and who have now no direct interest in the schools, should certainly not be allowed to vote. If this suggestion were acted upon, with the necessary conscience clause, none but the rabid and unreasoning sections of the community could object. I would like to see the plan adopted to settle the vexed question now occupying public attention.—l am, etc., DEMOCRAT Wellington, September 30.
