DRINKS FOR FRIENDS

LIABILITY OF A SERVANT. In September, J. H. Archer, licensee of the Family Hotel, Lower Hutt, was charged in the Lower Hutt Magistrate’s Court with having allowed liquor to be consumed unlawfully on his premises. Wha the case was heard, Mr. C. R. Barrett, who appeared for accused, contended that tlu> licensee was not responsible if a servant in . the hotel were to get the drinks from the licensee, and then serve them to his own friends. In a reserved judgment delivered restorday, Mr. J. H. Salmon, ,S.M., held that, in the circumstances, it was perfectly clear that a servant could not supply drinks to his friends, even though it might bo an anomaly of tho law that o meat might supply his own friends with drinks. Since there was no doubt that the licensee had acted in good faith, tho Magistrate imposed a nominal fine of £2.
