MASTERTON PARK
ACQUIRING EXTRA LAND
Mastertoil, October 5
The work to be carried out by the Masterton .Beautifying Society in extending the Mastcrton Park, when it has acquired, through an exchange with the Department of Education, the education reserve adjoining the park, is being regarded with interest. Asked what lines the society intended pursuing when it extended the park, Mr R. S. Halliwell (secretary) stated to a Dominion representative that at the present time the society had no definite plan prepared. The transfer of the land had yet to be sanctioned by Parliament, and it was now too late in the year to plant trees or carry out any’ work. However, a complete working plan would no doubt be formulated, and it was likely that thq acquired land would be laid out in lawns and gardens, with possibly a playing area for children and an -up to date camping site for motorists. The work would necessarily be a gradual one, portions being carried out year by year, but the society had the funds in hand to carry out its programme. Mr. Halliwell pointed out that Lansdowne suburb was regarded by many people as being an appreciable distance from the town. This impression was regarded as being largely due to the effect of the bare stretch of land which at present constituted the education reserve lying between the park and Lansdowne, and when the former was properly’ laid out and planted, present conditions would be much improved, and the northern approach to the town beautified.
