HEAVY BETTING ON FIRST TWO DAYS

Sydney, October 5. Exceptionally heavy betting marked tho first two days of the Randwick meeting. It is estimated that the bookmakers lost JllOO.OOO over the success of Vaals iu tho Epsom and Murillo in the Metropolitan. One leading firm of bookmakers had to pay out JC40.000 on two wagers, besides other heavy obligations. All the bookmakers wore more or less hit, particularly over doubles. It is reported that one of tho smaller operators is unable to meet bis obligations immediately. BICOLOR SCRATCHED FOR CAULFIELD CUP (Rcc. October 5. 10.45 p.m.) Melbourne, October 5. Bicolor has been scratched for the Caulfield Cup. Ho will run in the Melbourne Cup. MANAWATU HUNT CLUB MEETING LADY DESMOND WINS CHIEF FLAT HANDICAP HUNT CLUB CUP TO FRISCO JACK (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.” Palmerston North, October 5. The Manawatu Hunt Club’s annual steeplechase meeting was held at Awapuni to-day in fine weather. Tho attendance was moderate. Frisco Jack gave a fine exhibition in the Hunt Club Steeplechase, and won easily. Lady Desmond greatly enhanced her New Zealand Cup prospects by scoring decisively in the Kairanga Handicap. The lotalisator handled Ji11,078 as’ compared to Ji11,411 last year. HUNTERS’ HURDLES. There were only three starters in the opening event, and Pink Rose was the favourite" in a small pool of just over £3OO. In an uninspiring contest, Pink Rose led all tho way. and beat Atone by three parts of a length. Atene went up at several fences, but Pink Rose comfortably held his own. Sir Fanciful never looked likely. MAIDEN PLATE. The locally-trained Shining Star, from G. Now’s stable, was spoken of as likely to perform well in the Maiden Plate, and l.e was made a substantial favourite, Fee Simple and Aro de Vai being tue best 1 coked of the others. Vigilance and Shining Star began best, and led <o the turn, where Feo Simple and Calitho were most prominent of the bunch. Once in the straight the leading pair lirew right away, and Vigilance had no difficulty iu holding off Shining Star, and winning by nearly three lengths. Feo Simple was eight lengths away, with Dainty "Ways fourth, just in front of Calitho. Tho supporters of Vigilance got a good price. She was easily tho winner all the way, proving once more that disclosed form is generally better than reputation. The bunch made air inglorious display. Calitho had a lot of ground to make up, and Dainty Ways, a three-year-old fillv bv Arrowsmith from Dainty Step trained by A. Goodman at Trentham, shaped promisingly. Aro de Vai got a bad start, and his position was hopeless from the beginning. HUNT CLUB CUP. Six started in the Hunt Cup, and Maidos finished up two tickets ahead o Frisco Jack, the latter, despite the fact that ho bolted twice round before the start, being confidently expected by his supporters. Frisco Jack led all tho way. and although Birkenose and The Curragh drew up with a round to go, he went away again, »ud »on very east y by eight lengths from Birkenose. Risk, the only other runner to stand up, was a noor third. Frisco Jack is a remarkably tough gelding, for after bolting a couple of miles and running a three miles steeplecliiisp in front, lie was still full of hie on returning to scale. Mai dos might possibly have been second had he not fallen ‘five furlongs from home. Ho juir-ped rhe stand double very badly the first time, and it took the steam out of him. It is remarkable how the rider of Risk stayed in the saddle, for at several fences he was nearly down.. Craigowan broke a hind leg early in the contest. AOKAUTERE HANDICAP. Kcddar, the Hastings maiden winner, who enjoys a good reputation, was a hot Favourite for the hack sprint, in which nine started. Tho Raider and Arch Arrow led to the straight from Kcddar, but once in line Keddnr forged ahead and won by nearly two lengths. Heads separated Tho Raider, Arch Arrow, and Archon, while Borseline was the best of the others. Keddar won nicely, but did not have a great deal in hand. Superior riding got The Raider second from Arch Arrow. Archon ran a good race.

KAIRANGA HANDICAP. Lady Desmond, who looked bright and well, was a slightly better favourite than A nolo for the open handicap. She misbehaved at tho post, but at No. 1 the others gave her plenty ot room, anil a good start was effected. Buoyant and Royal Land led from Lady Desmond, with Star Area. Novar, and A nolo next. On the turn there was some crowding, and Rouex got squeezed back. Down the back stretch Royal Land led from Buoyant, Lady Desmond, Novar, Star Area, Rouex, and Brigadier Hill. Thcie was little change till the critical stages entering the straight; hero Lady Desmond collared the leaders and went on to score decisively by a length nn-1 a half from Anolo, who camo v ell and beat Star Area, by a couple of lengths. Close up were Rouex, Norar, Brigadier Bill, and Crown Area. Lady Desmond was always going well in behind the leaders, and in the firal issue she demonstrated her superior class. Anolo and Star Area ran good races, and so did Rouex. The latter was unlucky in the running. Ho is low racing consistently, and should not bo discarded for to-day’s defeat. Novar was fair, but had every chance. Crown Area for a sprinter was a long time in showing any pace, and gave Ibe hunch a good start. He finished well "p, and was running strongly. HUNTERS’ STEEPLES. Tho four lop weights were scratched for the Hunters’ Steeples, and Panchilo was a. hot favourite. It was only a matter of him standing up to win, and be successfully did this. He was tiring badly at the finish, and beat Ateno by only two lengths, with Lightmore a poor third. They were tho only horses to finish, the combat being devoid of interest apart from the wirner’s great jumping. A SURPRISE VICTORY. Bevis and Joyeuso were missing from the Kiwitea Hack Hurdles Handicap, in which Vexatious was a .£2O better favourite (han Peshwa. The winner came from the outside of the field in Clirissarto, who. although he lost ground at the fences, outpaced the other runners vn the flat Peshwa and Chrissarto turned for homo on terms, but in the run home Chrissarto outpaced Peshwa to win by two lengths, with Vexatious three lengths bac.k.

AIRTIGHT FINISHES WELL. Henna wound up favourite for tho Flaxbourne Hack Handicap, in which Anolo, Wanderlust. Abisogue, Lin Arlington and Borselene were numbered among the missing. Pangolin and Archon were smartest to begin and led along the back from Airtight, Henna, and Joyeuso. Landed in the straight. Airtight and Henna made forward moves, and in a good finish tho former prevailed by a length from Henna, with Joyeuso half a length back. Then came Pangolin, Mister Gamp and Archon together.

AUCKLAND NOTES INTERESTING GALLOPS AT ELLERSLIE STAR STRANGER COMING ON WELL Dominion Special Service. Auckland, October 5. Grand Knight, who has arrived at Ellerslie, is looking exceptionally well, and did steady pace work on the sand this morning. Wild Pigeon, Shot Silk. Treshani, Civility, Paleta. Kiosk. Romantic, -Manly, and Anchor have arrived at Ellerslie to fulfil engagements at the A.R.C. spring meeting. Lysander continues to go along I«■ right way at Ellerslie, and he .should ho hard to dispose of the first time he is seen out. He ran four furlongs very nicely yesterday morning. Gala Day seems to thrive on racing, and sinco he won at the Avondale meeting ho has Been getting through serviceable work at Ellerslie. Ho should give a good account of himself at the forthcoming spring meeting. Damaris won the Wanganui Guineas, and sinco then was raced in the Henderson Handicap nt the Avondale meeting. The conditions were not in her favour, but she promises to strip verv fit when the Great Northern Guineas field is paraded. Yesterday she ran a good six furlongs. sVhat promised to ho a good performance over the steeplechase fences yesterday morning was spoilt when Manganui swerved around to the mile post after he had cleared the old water jump owing to the bit breaking. Ho had been fencing in rare stylo, until the mishap occurred, and would have given his companions something to do to head Him off. besides which the run over tho hill would have been something in his favour in view of his race in tho Hunters’ Btoonlcchase on Saturday next.

Nippy. To Choucas. and Prince Hiitnphrev claim engagements nt the 'Wellington spring men ting— >.u fact they are

the only threo'Aucklanders entered. The shifting of the dates forward of tho Auckland Racing Club this year ha.s reflected itself in the Wellington nominations, for usually there are quito a few northerners anxious to test out their horses prior to the Auckland spring meeting. Now, the position is reversed, the Auckland meeting coming before the Wellington fixture. One is inclined to believe that despite the fact that the move was made to assist tho Canterbury Jockey Club, quite a number of prominent North Island horses will have had nearly enough racing for a time before the New Zealand Cup meeting rolls round, and in consequence the entries may not be up to expectations for Riccarton events. • Rafferty and Glenlight pleased the track watchers by their good display over the big fences yesterday morning at headquarters. They are both engaged in the Hunters’ Steeplechase to be run uext Saturday and should perform well. Master Doon sprinted up to his best form over four furlongs on the outside of tho course proper at Ellerslie yesterday. He is in great heart and will be hard to heat in any event that he is started in on Saturday next at Ellerslie. Odin was tried over a couple of hurdles yesterday morning at Ellerslie and jumped boldly, shaping as though he had been quite used to the game. He is from that good jumper Konra, and that possibly accounts for his aptitude for the- game. Glenlight fenced '•eally well at headquarters yesterday .’joining in a schooling task over the big fenres, including tho hill. He has improved in condition since he last raced and appears to be jumping with a lot more confidence than lie previously displayed. Glenotus gave a clever jumping exhibition over the big fences at Ellerslie yesterday. He took every fence alike, never made a mistake, and promises to have a lot of friends when he is saddled up to contest the Onehunga Steeples at Ellerslie on Monday next. Laughing Prince beat Ruanui very comfortably at Ellerslie yesterday morning over six furlongs, running the distance in Imin. 21 l-sscc. He won the Avondale Guineas in good style, and is sure to be in demand for the Great Northern Guineas on Saturday. Edifice gave a much improved display over the big fences during a schooling bout at headquarters yesterday morning. His jumping still leaves room for improvement, and he does not appear likely to attain the same distinction as Wharncliffe, who is a full-brother to him.

karamu has not been schooled since he scored in the hurdle race on the first day at the Avondale meeting. However, he is working in good style on the flat, and looks an improved horse. He will contest the Manukau Hurdles on the concluding day of the Auckland spring meeting. Lord Guy has improved in condition very much during the last few weeks, ami is now getting quite solid looking. He was given a run over a few furlongs on Hie outside of the course proper at Ellerslie yesterday morning, and although not ridden out he impressed by his bold style ot galloping. Te Monanui has been working very pleasingly during the last week, and galloped a strong round rutside the trestles on the course proper at Ellerslie yesterday. He carried more weight than Desert Glow, who was associated with him during the gallop, and gained a lot of friends by the way in which he completed his task. Te Monanui looks greatly improved with the race he had at the Avondale meeting, and will strip in much better condition for the Mitchelson Cup next Saturday. Ballymoy II was sprinted on the course proper at Ellerslie yesterday morning, and went very well over half a mile. This mare is in pretty good fettle just now, and it should not be long before she gets on the winning list again it the going is firm. Reports from Matamata credit Valkon with training on well, and he Ims I eon entered for ths chief sprint event, tlie Kirikiriroa Handicap, run on the second day of the Waikato spring meeting. As a three-year-old last season the son of Valkyrian displayed great pro-

mise, and won the last five races which he contested at that age. . Beau <• Cavalier has been withdrawn from the Onehunga Steeplechase, which was not unexpected, for the Chesterfield gelding has done no work’on the local track for some weeks. The mjurv sustained to liis knee through a fall on the road has now almost healed. Catkin has been working in good style since the Avondale meeting, and will strip in good fettle for his engagements at the Auckland spring fixture. In the event of the Catmint, gelding starting in the Auckland Guineas ue will be ridden by A. E. Ellis. Branson is getting through a lot of useful work at headquarters, and, with improved going the Greyspear gelding should run well in hack events at the Auckland meeting. He showed up well in the Swanson Handicap at the Avondale fixture, being with the leaders to tho straight entrance,, and the racing is bound to improve him. Star Stranger has been coming on well sinco his arrival at Ellerslie. As the result of his gallop with Star God yesterday morning on the course proper he is sure to come into favour for the Mitchelson Cup. He ran a round in 2.4 with the trestles well out. and galloped well all the way. White Eve. a six-year-old sister to Snake bv Quin Abbey—Oison. osrned m the Te Awamutu district, will make her first public appearance in a race at la Rapa this month Pegaway will have his first run this season, at the Waikato spring meeting, which opens at Te Rana on October 21. The Lucullus gelding developed into a good handicap performer last season and was one of the most improved horses around the countrv. From a win ,m the Orakau Hack Race at the Waipa meeting in December last he went on and won (he Plunket Handicap at Ellerslie, the Piikefntn and Waitomo Handicaps at Te Kuiti. the Herries Memorial. Cup at To Aroha. and the President s Fnndicap at the Auckland Racing Clnh s autumn meeting in April. -™ pturins in stake money a total of <Ll9Bn. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Vigilant.") At the last moment W. H Dwyer has decided to send Paleta to the Auckland meeting. Before leaving'for Ellerslie Civility was responsible for an attractive gallop oyer four furlongs, leaving thes distance behind in 48 4-5. A repetition of that gallop on the day ot the races would make her chance of success good. Gascony, judging by his track, work, is going to bo well to the tore in the Guineas at Ellerslie next Saturday, his gallop (over three furlongs in 38 4-ssec.) was the best of the.morning, on Tuesday, so there are indications of him returning to his best form. The only thing that might be against Gascony is that ho has not had a race this season and most of his opponents have had the benefit of one or more races. The racing of late that has taken place in the South Island has revealed that Master Clarence and Gold Mint have been very unlucky runners. Rascal also has shaped so well that his turn is near at hand.

Full Feather (Autumnus— Equipment) is one of the most promising youngsters at Riccarton and will probably entry 9ir George Clifford’s colours in the M elleslev Stakes. Child’s play, by Autumnns—Helter Skelter, is mentioned as_the stable’s representative for the McLean Stakes.

The two-year-old filly Episode, has been verv sore and has not been out of a walk since she contested the Avondale Stakes The soreness seems to be passing off gradually, but it is very unlikely that she ''ill compete at the coming meeting. Episode is a very snecdv filly flint may come good later in the season, and to miss a few of her early engagements will do her no harm. (Continued on Page 15.)

Aussie is sprinting with lots of dash and has recorded smart times in his .latest gallops. It is true that Lio lias only plates on and this assists him in making time, but nis work lias pleased bv the manner of its accomplishment. 'Tiie Fortafix gelding is well forward, but he has not raced since the autumn and in the good company he has to meet in his coming engagement ho may feel the want of recent racing at the finish, says a Northern exchange.

Ituanui displayed a lot-of speed in the early part of a six furlong gallop at Ellerslie on Saturday last, although he was stopping rather badly towards the finish. He is engaged in a seven furlong event on Saturday next, but may require a nice before being at his best.

Second Wind ran a good race in the Nursery Handicap at the Avondale meeting, and the race appears to have improved him, lor he ran a smart halfmile on the No. 1 grass at Ellerslie last Saturday morning. Hq is a fine big two-year-old that will probably act a Jot better when the ground is firm.
