THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.”)

Entries for the principal handicaps at , tlio Canterbury Jockey Club’s New Zealand Cup meeting, also for the Canterbury Cup and Stead Cup will close on Friday at S p.m.

Nominations for all events at the spring meeting of tho Masterton Racing Club will close on Monday, at ‘J p.m.

The two-year-old Raasay, who has been successful in his two starts so far, will not go to Ellerslie to race at tho Auckland spring meeting.

Star Stranger, now that Clio tracks have dried up at Auckland, is doing good work. Ho may possibly not bo strung up sufficiently to win tho Mitchelson Cup, but ho will, with a firm track, run a lot better- than generally expected. Had Avondale conditions not been so bad he would now have been very near his best form.

Laughing Prince continues to do well and ho is ono of the most prominent track workers at Ellerslie, where his doings have been all that could bo desired. Damaris is another three-year-old who has been hitting out very freely.

The Archcry filly Tripaway showed good form last season as a two-year-old. She has yet to make an appearance this present season, but Oaniaru reports state that she is showing good form in her track work.

Mr. L. G. Paul, of Wanganui, has not bad a great deal of luck with Alloway, and now comes the news that ho broke his leg in training operations in Auckland. Alloway, a chestnut gelding by Limond —Adinyra, was bred by his owner, his dam being one of tho Elderslio stud products by Solferiuo from imported Temba. Alloway was a four-year-old. Ho did no racing at 2 yeai’s but last season made his debut at Feilding in tho. spring on tho occasion of the Marton Jockey Club’s meeting. Ho was unplaced tho first day but won the Novice Stakes on the next day. In all ho had .17 starts and won two more races, while ho was also twice second and onco third. His wins were in tho Kowhai Hack Handicap at tho Feilding spring meeting and in the Fergusson Handicap on the second day of tho Auckland summer meeting. Ho finished second to Nukumai in tho Parliamentary Handicap at the Wellington winter meeting and also second on each day of tho Wanganui spring meeting last month to Mask and Tresham respectively. Alloway, during his short career as a racehorse, won <£lo9o in stakes and during tho past few weeks Mr. Paul had refused good offers for him.

Hawera reports stato that Kayo, who is engaged at the Manawatu Hunt meeting to-daj-, will be an absentee, having caught a cold, and ho will bo turned out till next jumping season.

Aro do Vai and Vexatious left Trcnthani yesterday to fulfil engagements at tho - Manawatu Hunt meeting to-day.

Tho middle of tho trial grass was open for galloping yesterday at Trent-, ham, but most of tho horses engaged at Otaki postponed their gallons until to-day. Lausanne and Carrigaflen ran four furlongs in 50sec., and Oratrix left a mato well behind over seven furlongs in Imin. 32sec.

Dcgago will probably be ridden at Otaki this week by R. Reed.

Racing at Awapuni to-day will commence at 11.15 a.m. with the To Maiti Maiden Plate. Of those who have been seen in public, Aro de Vai, Vigilance and Feo Simple have tho best credentials.

On form Pink Rose and Ballyfarnon look tho most likely in tho Ruutnai Hunters’ Hurdles, but Sir. Fanciful is much superior class, and if ho is all right ho would be hard to beat. Seeing that ho has been qualified as a hunter, there should not bo much wrong with him. Doyleston is another likely sort, and this pair may bo tho most troublesome, for the form of Pink Roso and Ballyfarnon is only moderate.

Frisco Jack won the Hunt Steeplechase so well at Dannevirke that he will be well backed to-day, and on th.it performance ho should beat all his Dannsvirko opponents again. Maidos should bo prominent, as his form is good. Risk may be a possibility. Ho ran third nt Dannevirko and made up u lot of ground over tho last mile.

Several in the Aokautero Handicap have form to their credit, notably Keddar, Tho Raider, Abisogne, Feo Simple and Borscline. Taking a lino through Wanganui hack form, which is better than that engaged to-day, Henna should show up. and Lin Arlington also, who ran fairly well at Dannevirko, may bo

troublesome. This pair appeal as the most likely.

Lady Desmond has a fair weight to carry in the Kairanga Handicap, but she should, judged on Hawera track doings, bo fairly well forward, and she is likely to run well. Rouex raced very consistently at Napier, and when he does his best ho is hard to beat, even in tho strongest class. .Novar appears to bo improving, and Brigadier Bill, on the way he finished in tho handicap on tho second day of the Marton meeting, should show up. Lady Desmond and Rouex, however, represent superior class, with Crown Area included if ho is himself.

Frisco Jack appears again, in the Parorangi Steeplechase., and if a starter must again bo considered. The shorter distance, however, will suit Panchito, who looks likely to run well, and it is possible that Ruby Ring may bo improved by his Marton and Wanganui experiences.

Peshwa has good form in the Kiwitea Hack Hurdles, but ho is not out of the ordinary, and on tho way Revel ran at Danncvirko_ ho should be dangerous to-day. Vexatious can run a good race when in the mood, and Bovis is a likely sort. Bevis and Revel may do best.

Anolo carried 9.9 when lio ran second at Marton to Athenry, and. at Wanganui Athenry proved that form to be particularly good. With 9.13 to-day in the Flaxbourno Handicap, Anolo should show up. Henna and Lin Arlington appear again, and both must be considered, while amongst the lightweights Archon may show up.

The Orari trainer, R. C. Keeper, was unfortunate in not being able to send Tho Babe and Volant to the post at Geraldine last week. The former suffered a wrench earlier in the week, and the injury is severe enough to prevent him racing at this week’s meetings. Volant struck himself a few days before the Geraldine fixture, but in his case ho will bo fit enough to carry out his engagements at Oaniaru next Saturday. Volant was expected to run well at Geraldine.

While High Gear was being ridden along tho road at Mosgiel last week ho foil and badly cut both his knees. In consequence, Mr. L. C. Hazlett has decided to turn tho horse out. and ho will not be a starter at the D.J.C. meeting next week.

The three-year-old fill.y Glad Light has attracted tho attention of track watchers at Riccarton by her promising work, and it is hoped that her early promiso will bo fulfilled in due course.

For some timo past (says tho “Otago Daily Times”) investigations have been inado concerning tho ownership of Marmont. Mark Twain, Mountain Roso, and San Salvador. Tho Southland District Committee recently dealt with tho matter, but although a partial verdict was arrived at no official intimation was published. It was learnt during tho progress of tho Geraldine meeting that J. F. Jones, formerly of Winton, has been disqualified for three years in connection with the matter, and others concerned will be submitted tQ examination on October 19.

Tailaiata has left Hawera to race at Ellerslie, and it is stated that he will remain with his owner in tho north.

It would seem that tho Messrs. J. E. and C. H. O’Brien huvo shown great judgment in retaining tho brother to Rampion, and although full relations to outstanding performers on tho turf have not, in the majority of cases, emulated tho deeds of their elders, Ramulus looks like being a notable exception. Tho colt displays plenty of quality, and ho has shown more than once that he can gallop speedily. In view of tho striking contrast in the performances of Chester and Roods. I’oitrcl and Boilu, Amberite and Peltsser, Biplapo and Winged Victory, Gloaming and Lightning. Beauford, and Glen Garry, and Eurythmic and Niello, to mention a few full relations (says an Australian writer), it will bo interesting to seo how close Ramulus goes to Ratu pion’s record. Commendation’s absence from the Champion Plato field has been remarked upon, but it was hardly likely that he would race a week later than tho Caulfield Cup, from which he was withdrawn at great expense. tl will probably be summer, and even autumn, before we seo Commendation again.

Tho third day of the A.J.C. spring meeting will bo held at Randwick today. The principal events are tho Craven Plate, a weight-for-ago race, run over a milo ami a quarter, and tho Gimcrack Stakes for two-year-old filiies. Limerick will have another opportunity in tho Craven Plato of adding to his record, and in tho Gimcrack Stakes the Welling-ton-owned Paper Money filly Endorse will get an opportunity of showing her paces.
