“A CUNNING SCHEME”
YOUNG MAN SENT TO PRISON
“There are some very unsatisfactory elements about this case, for the accused impersonated an employee,” said Mr. J. 11. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate s Court yesterday, when referring to John l.arnach Shearer, a young salesman, who was charged with obtaining from Turnbull and Jones, Ltd., electric lights, valued at <£lB Bs. 7d. by falsely representing that lie had paid lor them. The business community has to be protected,” continued the Magistrate, "and this man has committed an extremely cunning and deeply-laid scheme of false pretences. It is a case for imprisonment, and I shall sentence him to a short, sharp term, which I hope will have the desired effect. Accused will be sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. For obtaining a dinner suit, valued at jCI7 17b. from James Arthur Doherty by falsely representing that he would send the tailor’s boy back with a cheque when he delivered the suit at his office, Shearer, for whom Mr. B. J. Dolan appeared, was convicted and discharged.
