RIFLE SHOOTING

SEASON OPENS AT TRENTHAM PEt6nE CLUB' The Petone Rifle Club fired their opening match for the 1927-28 season at Tienthaiu on Saturday. Despite the counter attraction of the North v. South Island Rugby match, and the absence of Messrs. A. E. and W. IL Ballinger, who are with the New Zealand team competing in Australia, there was a good attendance. Tho ranges were 360 and 500 yards, and the conditions were almost perfect. Several of the members were using Mark VII ammunition for the first time at the short range, and this accounted for some of the noticeably small scores on the part o£ some of last year’s A grade shootists. The opening fixture took the form of a match between teams chosen by Deputy-presidents W. Jackson and W. Mclver, and a very interesting contest resulted in a tie. Judging by the form displayed by some of the shootists, there should be keen rivalry and close results in the various club competitions throughout the season. At 300 yards, J. Scott. P. Walsh. F. Kershaw, and R. H. Nicholl each registered 46, and at 500 yards. . Pedersen 48, W. Johnston 46, and W. Mclver 46, were the highest range scorers. J. Scott, with 91, tops the list, followed by P. Walsh and L. Wales, with 90 each. The following are the scores: —
