NEWTOWN DEFEAT HUTT. The best exhibition of League of a fast, willing type was played between Newtown and Hutt on Saturday. Hutt attacked and an awkward situation was relieved by a splendid line kick by Phillips. Nunn instituted a passing rush which ended in Jones scoring. B. Bowan missed the kick. Hutt 3, Newton 0. Resuming, Hutt again put on the pressure and compelled Newtown to force. Hutt now had a turn of defence, but were proving safe Hyland with a straight run, started the ball, which went through all the backs to Cninuuer, who scored. Sanke Green kicked a fine goal. Newtown 5, Hutt 3. From the kick-off Hutt attacked, throwing the ball about in fine style and kicking with rare judgment. The Newtown team were pushed back into their own quarter bv good work on the part of Nunn. The play continued on Newtown lino until Crewther, selling several Hutt, players “the dummy,” took play to Hutt twenty-five, where Collins was tackled in possession. With one of their characteristic rushes, Hutt passed the ball from one wing to the other and traversed tho field for Jones to score far out. The kick missed. Hutt 6, Newtown 5. Next Nunn essayed a pot but missed. Newtown now took a hand in attacking, but Crummer spoilt a great run and threw away a certain try by hanging on. Nunn threw the ball wide out for Balks to score a determined try and add tho goal points. Hutt 9, Newtown 5. Newtown made the pace a cracker. McRaudall gathered up and with a useful kick caught Hutt napping for Crummer to race away and score a sensational try. Green kicked the goal. Newtown 10. Hutt 9. With only a few minutes to go, Hutt made an attack, but it was only brief, as Newtown were not to be denied and carried play io tho Hutt line, where heady play by Hyland ended in Hill netting across.
