With the commencement of tunnelling operations at the second tunnel beyond Tangarakau. on the Stratford-Main Trunk railway, a spirit of keen rivalry is developing between the gangs (states the "Taranaki News”). Last month the old hands working in No. 1 tunnel drove 100 ft., while the new gang ran them very close with’ a record of 99ft. By ths middle of next month there will be five gangs operating in the three big tunnels, and it is expected the competition will become more marked as. the work progresses.
