During the paest month (says the •'Southland Times") the quantity ot guano nnd phosphates which has arrived at Bluff has reached the remarkably, nign figure of 13.200 tons, which is consider.} ! to bo the largest importation of fertil iser so far made into Southland. Every yoai at about this time, owing to the seasonal demand for fertilisers by the farmers, large quantities of guano are imnorted into the Dominion, but so far as ic known the recent importations into Dln't are the lamest in the nis ory of the nort and certainly exceed the quantify brought in the previous, year. Tim importations commenced with the arrival of the Swedish four-masted bnrqng Beatrice, which arrived at Bluff oh August 27 after a smart passage from the Seychelles Islands. Her cargo conRiited of 30<M> tons of miano from Juan de Nova. She was followed by the Norwegian steamer Austvard. which arrived on September 1G from Safaga Bay (Red Sea, via Wellington, with 2000 tons of nl-osphate. Tho third arrival was .lie trior Company’s steamer Katina. from ’•'aipolo Island, via Noumea and Dunedin. with 1200 tons of guano. Tho British tramp steamer Ensom. the last: [man. boat, expected for the season, arrived from the Seychelles Islands with a full cargo of 3000 tons.
