“AN EXCELLENT THING”

SUPPRESSING THE BOOKMAKER. By Telegraph.—press association. Pahiatua, July 27 At the annual meeting of the Pahiatua Racing Club tho president, Mr. J McCardie, referred to the numerous substantial improvements made to the ground, and various appointments during the year. Referring to tho Gaining Bill, Mt. McCardie said that it- would serve to make tho lot of the bookmaker much harder. Looking at it from a sporting point of view the suppressing of the bookmaker was an excellent thing. In all the small towns there wore mon who would bet on credit or any other way so long as they got hold of the money. Ho did not suggest that all bookmaker! were dishonourable, but the system lent itself to a good deal of undesirable betting. Although bookmaking was a punishable offence, it was a very hard one to stop. I ntbe speaker’s opinion racing information should bo made public and above board. As things were at present one had to go up a back aley whispering to find out from a bookmaker or his clerk what won the last race. It was very desirable that tho Bill should go through RACING IN ENGLAND GOODWOOD STEWARDS’ CUP. London, July 2G. The following is the result of the principal race at Goodwood to-day:— STEWARDS’ CUP, of 1500 sovs. Seven » furlongs. Mr. J. Joel’s br. h. Priory Park, by Rocksavage—Chatham 11. 6yrs. ... 1 Lord Kenmare’s gr. f. Queen’s Bower, by Roi Herode—Euchre, 4yrs. ... 2 Colonel A. Blake’s ch. c. Fohanaun, by Glasgerion—Thistle, 4yrs 3 There were twenty-four starters. Won by two lengths. Ur. H. A. Knight deserves the thanks of punters for striking Limerjck out of the Melbourne Cup at this early stage (says the Sydney "Referee”). Many people had decided, that Limerick would fun in the w.f.a.' races at Randwick and that the Melbourne Cup would bf his handicap mission. Consequently two cups doubles ending with Limericl were in demand.
